An Argument for Grunting to Explain Complex Concepts
For years now, some in media have suggested that wordage and its accompanying conceptual framework hover around an 8th grade reading level. For example, instead of using “anthropogenic forcing of the radiative balance,” we use the term “climate change.”
Consider the advantages: “anthropogenic forcing of the radiative balance” has fifteen syllables while “climate change” has three syllables.
Let’s improve on that.
Wouldn’t “Uh oh” be a better term for “anthropogenic forcing of the radiative balance?” It has two syllables instead of three syllables. Or consider the guttural for other concepts coming into use around the climate, Mitigation, Resilience, Adaptation, Sustainability, Decarbonization, Litigation. When in debate, why not take these terms and lump them into “Ah hah.” Again, two syllables–we’re on a roll.
The concept of grunt-rather-than-elucidate can be applied to many areas. For example, for “technology,” we could use the expression, “Ahhh.” In this case we are down to one syllable–do we have a variant of Moore’s Law at play here?
After all, when we consider the use of text in communication or the use of facts in explaining the climate does any of it really matter? So rather than getting frustrated with all that carbonized money, directed at misinformation, consider the succinctness, clarity, and unending frolic to grunting.
Mull this over, your favorite news people debating the climate via the grunt. To that end, we bring you the new evening news.

Our Special Debate on the Environment
“Uh oh.”
“Uh oh. No.”
“Uh oh!!!!!!”
“Uh oh. No.”
“Hmmm. Ah hah.”
“Ah hah bah. Ahhh.”
“Ahhh is not ah hah. Ahhh and ah hah?”
“Ahhh! poopoo on ah hah.”
“Ah hah. Ah hah. Ah hah.”
“Ah hah no! Ahhh.”
“Ahhh and ah hah.”
“Haha ahhh and ah hah.”
“Huh?”
“Ahhh.”
“Ahhh and uh oh is ugg. Ah hah.
“Ah hah? No. Ahhh.”
“Uh oh…”
How could we not embrace such brevity? Of course, we should not lose track of the words like:
- Ignorance
- Avarice
- Adaptation
- Mitigation
- Decarbonization
- Resilience
- Sustainability
- Accountability
- Deniability
- Litigation
- Incarceration
These words must have a place in our future.
Uh oh
